NO. 4 - STATED NEW TESTAMENT COMMANDS, CHARGES AND/OR ORDERS

 

The New Testament commands, charges and orders referred to in Category No. 4 are translated from 7 different Greek words. Listed below are those 7 Greek words, their definitions from "Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words" and the Scriptures where those specific Greek words are used.

A. COMMAND, CHARGE (paranggello). To pass on an announcement, hence denotes to give the word, order, give a charge, command, e.g., Mark 6:8; Luke 8:29; 9:21; Acts 5:28.
1. Acts 17:30 – Truly, these times of ignorance God winked at, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.
2. 1 Cor. 7:10 – Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord; A wife is not to depart from her husband.
3. 1 Th. 4:11 – That you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.
4. 2 Th. 3:6 – But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.
5. 2 Th. 3:10 – For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If any one will not work, neither shall he eat.
6. 2 Th. 3:12 – Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ, that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.
7. 1 Tim. 1:3,4 – As I urged you when I went into Macedonia – remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine. Nor give heed to fables (fiction) and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification.
8. 1 Tim. 4:11 – These things command and teach (4:6-11).
9. 1 Tim. 5:7 – These things command (KJ-charge) and teach (5:1-7).
10. 1 Tim. 6:17,18 – Command (KJ-charge) those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives richly all things to enjoy; do good, be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share.
B. COMMAND (entellomai). To charge or give charge, to command or give commandments, to enjoin.
1. Mt. 28:20 – Teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you…lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
2. Jn. 15:14 – You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.
3. Jn. 15:17 – These things I command you, that you love one another.
C. COMMANDMENT (entole). Denotes, in general, an injunction, charge, precept, commandment. It is the most frequent term and is used of moral and religious precepts.
1. Mt. 22:37,38 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind (the first and great commandment).
2. Mt. 22:39,40 – Love your neighbor as yourself (the second greatest commandment).
3. Jn. 13:34; 15:12 – Love one another as Christ loved you (a new commandment) (Jn. 14:15,21; 15:10).
4. Titus 1:14 – Not giving heed to Jewish fables (fiction) and commandments of men who turn from the truth.
5. 1 Jn. 2:3 – Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
6. 1 Jn. 2:4 – He who says I know Him and does not keep His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him.
7. 1 Jn. 3:23 – This is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ…love as He commanded.
8. 1 Jn. 5:3 – This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments and His commandments are not burdensome.
9. 2 Jn. 4 – I rejoiced…that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father.
10. Rev. 22:14 – Blessed are those who do His commandments…they have the right to the tree of life and the holy city. .
D. CHARGE (diamarturomai). Primarily signifies to testify through and through, bear a solemn witness; to charge earnestly
1. 1 Tim. 5:21,22 – I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people's sins; keep yourself pure.
2. 2 Tim. 2:14 – Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive (battle) about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
3. 2 Tim. 4:1,2,5 – I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom. Preach the word! Be instant in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and teaching. Be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
E. ORDAIN, COMMANDED, ORDERS (diatasso). To appoint, arrange, charge, give orders to.
1. 1 Cor. 7:17 – As God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one…let him walk…so I ordain in all the churches.
2. 1 Cor. 9:14 – Even so has the Lord commanded (ordained –KJ) that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
3. 1 Cor. 16:1,2 – Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also. On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. In the New King James translation (diatasso) has been translated ordain, command and order.
F. COMMANDED (prostasso). Denotes to arrange or set in order, to prescribe, give command.
1. Acts 10:33 – Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all things commanded you by God.
2. Acts 10:48 – And he (Peter) commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. Other Scriptures where (prostasso) is translated command, Matt. 1:24; 8:4; Mark 1:44.
G. CHARGE (horkizo). To administer an oath, to adjure, to charge on oath.
1. 1 Thess. 5:27 – I charge (adjure-RV) you by the Lord that this epistle (letter) be read to all the holy brethren.
